Obituary

Olga Elizabeth Hanas, age 91, passed away in Baltimore, Maryland on October 3, 2025.  She was the beloved wife of the late Roman Hanas, Jr., devoted mother of Orest Peter Hanas (Zirka Oksanna), Andrew Roman Hanas (Maureen Denise) and the late Daniel Josephat Hanas and loving grandmother to Alexander Roman Hanas, Victor Anthony Hanas and Julianna "Lyalya" Maria Hanas.

Olga was born September 18, 1934 in Hnezne, Slovakia.  She was the youngest daughter of three children, Frieda, the oldest, Gertrude, then Olga.  Olga was 14 years old when she immigrated to the United States in the Spring of 1949 after WWII with her sisters. She held dual citizenship along with her sisters, both Slovakian and USA citizenship, as their late father, Peter Simonik was an entrepreneur, and traveled often between the two countries to buy goods for the family's store which he owned in Hnezne.  Olga eventually married at the age of 19.  Her mother Julia Simonik immigrated to the United States in 1956 to join her daughters.

Olga was fluent in four languages, Slovak, German, English and Ukrainian. Although Slovak and German were the languages she grew up speaking, reading and writing, she eventually learned English when she immigrated to the United States and learned Ukrainian while dating her late husband and eventually became proficient in speaking and reading Ukrainian.  Not only did Olga learn to speak Ukrainian, she embraced and raised her children to uphold Ukrainian customs and traditions.  Olga was skilled at creating and designing ceramic artwork.  Her designs were unique, consisting of Slovak and Ukrainian regional styles.  She enjoyed reading, music, loved dancing, watching classic movies, theater and enjoyed being with friends, but foremost her family.

Family was Olga's focus in life.  She respected and loved her sons and daughters-in-law and adored and loved her grandchildren unconditionally.  Olga always said that family was important and that her mission in life was to keep her family together.  She always held holiday celebrations, as well as informal and impromptu gatherings to maintain family unity.  Olga always enjoyed participating in her grandchildren's school activities, such as band trips, assemblies, graduations, dance recitals, excursions to Kerhonkson, New York, and grandmother's day at school, to name a few.  Olga loved going on vacations with her family to the beach, especially Wildwood, New Jersey, where many fond memories will forever be with us.

Olga was kind, always offered guidance and advice with finesse.  She dressed conservatively but always had a modern twist which exemplified her charming and fun-loving character.  Her warm smile, positive disposition and generous spirit will truly be missed.  May Olga, Mom, Mom in Law and Grandmother rest with the angels in eternal peace.  Vichnaya Pamyat!
